Almoradi History: Originally called Amarión, Almoradi was allegedly founded in 1196 BC by king Brigo and it was the location of settlements of Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Moors.
It was the Moors who gave the town its present name and who established the town as an important agricultural centre using traditional Arab irrigation techniques to utilise the waters of the Segura river.
Originally Almoradi was controlled by the larger town of Orihuela and it finally became independent in 1586. Most of the town was destroyed by the earthquake of 1829 so most of the town's buildings date from after this time.
